Experimenting with pre-contact paint

A casual experiment that I decided to film. In which I mix fake ochre with fake sturgeon glue with fake bear grease to make fake authenti-paint. If I were to try the paint again, I would use less of each base and more water. I also wonder if there are any period feasible emulsifiers to help things blend nicely. Another idea I had is that maybe the paint could be allowed to harden into a block a...

A Yank in 1772 draws a Wampanoag from 1672 after the style of a Mohawk in England who has been dressed by a Dutchman in 1710. It was uncanny looking at this engraving as I have previously spent considerable time analyzing the source material. Another bit of weirdness I just noticed is the sleeves, one is buttoned and the other not, because he has taken the arms from two different people.

Think of a toaster, something that I can buy for 15 dollars at Canadian Tire, would be impossible for me to build. it is in a way not an object but a system. which is a really cool way to think of it, any given object being more representative of the system that made it than it is of itself. Chomsky wrote some great stuff about class inequality and labour specialization, i think he said something along the lines of "specialization is for ants". i bet youd love to read it. anyway great vid much interest!

So I have been curious but how did the Mohawk view diseases like small pox. I know in Japan they believe it was a terrible trickster spirit from China, and Europe it was seen as the wrath of God that killed your children. Did they have any supernatural beliefs on it or did they just chuck it up to being something normal to Europe like horses?

Baltic Empire & Gold and Gunpowder - Baltic Empire does videos of Scandinavia, Baltic Sea and Europe from pre historic to early modern period also videos of the viking age. Gold and Gunpowder does videos about golden era of American sea roving. Both run by same Swedish guy. Anttimation - Very small channel that does animation videos about Finnish history. (what I like about Antti is his animations are not those generic overly simplistic boring animations that poorly educate very surface level learners) Those are on top of my head what I could think of.

Interesting idea. 1) I'm pretty put off by the existence of women in the story only to nag their male family members. 2) once you have the basic technology, getting together the whole community for a big work day was probably a way to solidify group solidarity. There's evidence in some of the massive earthworks in the Americas (I want to say Cahokia??) that instead of having a few specific skilled workers doing the work over time, the communities deliberately did it all in a couple days using as many people as possible. Modern research shows that people who sing or march together have more fellow-feeling and loyalty; and then you can all point at the henge or pyramid or whatever and say, "yeah, I helped make that."

Also many native nations wore winter mocs. Made of hair-on hides resembling modern-day uggs to a certain point. Us Navajo say the best ones were made of buffalo skins. But we also made them from sheep pelts in the historic period. Hard sole and pucker toe mocs are purely for spring/summer and very light snow. Maybe your ancestors utilized moose or elk hides. I know the east had their own subspecies of elk back in the early days. Or maybe even deer hide with the hair left on and stuffed with grass. Like Otzi 🇮🇹

Armour makes sense for why stone heads wont be as popular, from 1050 onward in europe spears became less common following armour as clubs and blunt weapons increased In prehistory the very most you may find in terms of reliable armour found is hides and possibly dense cloth which with peoples practicing making these weapons most of their life will find the most durable stones and the best way to sharpen them before metal usage took hold

I imagine there is a bit of convergent evolution, if you'll allow the analogy, but when you described and showed how the tomahawk would bounce on the ground ahead of a charging warrior, I was immediately reminded of the Frankish axe, or Francisca. The Francisca was generally a throwing axe that could either be thrown directly at an enemy, or be thrown in a way to cause it to bounce on the ground ahead of Frankish charge, disrupting the enemy formation, or defensively, to disrupt an incoming charge. Looking at examples on the Wikipedia page for them I saw a lot of similarities in design and presumably construction. Some examples, and many reproductions, seem to be forged from a flat bar in a manner similar to a tomahawk en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisca Viking axes are similarly constructed as well - I guess when you are creating axes in large number from flat steel plates, for economy of material you're going to end up with that sort design a lot of the time. The pipe axe, however, seems to be uniquely North American. I thoroughly enjoy your videos and find your insights fascinating. Thank you for your time and effort on these.
